The watch covers a broad swath of eastern Ontario, including Ottawa South, Kanata, Orleans and surrounding communities. Meteorologists identified a volatile combination of heat, humidity and wind shear that could produce severe thunderstorms capable of spawning tornadoes through the afternoon and evening hours.
Conditions Favourable for Tornado Development

A warm, humid air mass sitting over the Ottawa Valley is colliding with an approaching cold front, creating the kind of instability that fuels severe thunderstorm development. Wind shear values measured by weather balloons this morning were well within the range associated with tornado-producing storms.
Forecasters noted that the greatest threat window runs from early afternoon through the late evening, when daytime heating will be at its peak.
